Reliability and spelling of names

The search engine should be used with a critical attitude and resourcefulness. A person can appear in the database under different names and with different spellings. In the nineteenth century people were not as precise with spelling. Surnames were often noted as the official heard it, which resulted in a wide range of spellings. Moreover, the cadastral administration Gallicized or Latinized many first names.

The Popp matrices and the original land registry documents are not error-free. Mistakes were made by Popp and his employees when transcribing the cadastral details and during typesetting. Land registry officials also made mistakes. The registration of first names seems particularly susceptible to errors.
