Poppkad Description
Good research needs good data. Progress in information and communication technology is accompanied by a growing demand by scientists for adequate study materials. Within historical research there is a need for sources that map the development of real estate possession in an encompassing and detailed manner. The Belgian land registry manages a sizeable inventory of real estate data that lead to the necessary insights with the assistance of modern techniques. The POPPKAD project unlocks historical real estate data by compiling cadastral records published by P.C. Popp into ready-to-use databases. It focuses on the study of owners and landownership relations in different area of Belgium in the nineteenth century.
The project entails the following tasks:
- Determine the exact date of all cadastral maps and matrices published by Popp
- Study the history of the cadastral Atlas of Belgium
- Compile an exhaustive list of owners, usufructuaries and leaseholders at the provincial level (provinces of Antwerp, Brabant, Hainaut and East Flanders)
- Select several regions for creating a database with data about owners and property from the same period
- Link the land registry details with existing statistical databases (LOKSTAT)
The POPPKAD project was financed by Ghent University and FWO-Flanders (Programme Medium Scale Research Infrastructures) (2013-2018).
